1949

As a year, 1949 is a particular, unique, and memorable year. To begin with. The first two digits are 1 and 9. 1 + 9 = 10. A perfect ten. Does it get any better than that? When you read the first two digits backward, 19 becomes 91. When you read the last two digits backward, 49 becomes 94. Both numbers can become two fairly advanced ages: 91 and 94, which I aspire to reach in good health.

1949 was the year my mother, with the help of my hometown midwife, gave birth to me between midnight on June 7 and 12:30 on June 8.

[To this day, my birth certificate says I was born on June 7, but my mother is sure that I was born after midnight, and therefore on June 8, 1949.]

Years later, my mother revealed that I was the first good thing in her life. Maybe I will never have special importance in the world, but the idea that I was the first good thing in my mother’s life pushes me to be an example for others.

It will not be easy to surpass the achievements made in 1949. To begin with, on April 4, the foundation of NATO was created, which has maintained peace throughout Europe for years. Who knows where it will end? At what point will the United States abandon the European nations to their fate and leave the way open to Russian power? Does the USSR have the right to be considered a super republic in Europe, as in Ukraine? To what extent will a united Europe be able to fight?

George Orwell published the political fiction book 1984 in 1949. Perhaps today, in 2025, we find ourselves in situations similar to those described in the book. Do we exist in an environment where anyone can be easily followed through the activations of our cell phones? The sought-after and desired privacy of the twentieth century no longer exists.

An event very close to my heart was the ‘Superga Tragedy’ that destroyed the Grande Torino team, whose members comprised most of the Italian National Football Team. They were so good and knew each other with their eyes closed that, perhaps, we would have won the 1950 and 1954 FIFA World Cups, bringing our haul of six FIFA World Cup victories ahead of Brazil and Germany. A feat. Unrepeatable!

I could go on, but I will stop with the consideration that the year 1949 will also be remembered as the year Pasquale Puleo was born. An ordinary man, Pasquale, contributed to the happiness of his family, friends, and acquaintances through his words (often uncomprehended) and gestures.

Come anno il  1949 e’ un anno particolare, unico, e speciale.  Per cominciare. Le prime due digita, 1 e 9. 1 + 9 = 10. Un dieci perfetto. Meglio di cosi’? Quando si legge le prime due digita al riverso 19 diventa 91. Quando invece si legge le ultime due digita al riverso 49 diventa 94. Tutte i due numeri possono diventate due eta’ abbastanza avanzate: 91 e 94  a cui ambito ad arrivare in buona salute. 

Il 1949 fu l’anno in cui mia madre con  l’aiuto della levatrice del mio paese, Salice, mi mese alla luce tra la mezzanotte del 7 Giugno e le 12,30 dell’ 8 Giugno. 

[Tutt’oggi, il mio certificato di nascita indica la mia nascita il 7 Giugno ma mia madre e’ sicurissima che io nacqui dopo la mezzanotte e, dunque l’8 Giugno del 1949.] 

Anni dopo, mia madre mi rivelo’ che fui la prima cosa bella della sua vita. Magari, non avrò mai un’importanza speciale nel mondo, ma l’idea di essere stato la prima cosa bella nella vita di mia madre mi spinge a essere un esempio per il prossimo. 

Non sarà’ facile superare i traguardi raggiunti nel l 1949. Per cominciare, il 4 Aprile fu creata la fondazione della NATO che per anni ha mantenuto la pace in tutta l’Europa. Chissà’ dove andrà’ a finire? A quale punto gli Stati Uniti abbandoneranno le nazioni europee alle loro proprie sorte e lasciare la via libera al potere russo?  Ha il USSR  ha il diritto a essere considerato un  super regno in Europa  come in Ucraina? Fino a che punto l’Europa unita riuscirà’ a combattere?

Nel 1949 ci fu anche la pubblicazione del libro di fantapolitica ‘1984’

di George Orwell.  Forse, oggi come oggi, nel 2025 ci troviamo in situazioni simili agli eventi descritti nel libro. Esistiamo in un ambiente dove qualsiasi di noi può’ essere facilmente seguiti attraverso le attivazioni dei nostri telefonini? Non c’e’ più la privacy ricercata e desiderata del novecento.

Un evento che mi sta’ molto a cuore fu la Tragedia di Superba che distrusse il Grande Torino di cui i componenti formavano la maggior parte della Nazionale Italiana di Calcio. Erano cosi’ tanto bravi e si conoscevano a occhi chiusi che, forse, avremmo vinto i Mondiali FIFA del 1950 e 1954 portando il nostro bottino di sei vittorie della Coppa Mondiale FIFA davanti al Brasile e Germania. Che impresa?  Irripetibile! 

Potrei continuare ma smetto con la considerazione che l’anno 1949  sarà ricordato anche  come l’anno quando nacque Pasquale Puleo, un uomo qualsiasi che attraverso i suoi gesti e le sue parole (spesso incompresibili) contribui alla felicita’ della sua famiglia, amici, e conoscenti.
